Extremely slow plotting on Space Acres

Issue Report

Environment

  • Operating System: Win11 Pro
  • Space Acres/Advanced CLI/Docker: Space Acres 0.2.14

Problem

I’ve noticed that over the past couple of weeks space acres has been getting a lot of expired blocks that either aren’t replotting, or are replotting absurdly slowly (even for my cpu-only plotting, which is using a ryzen 9 5900x). I’ve tried closing it out and opening it again, and generally it runs uninterrupted in the background most of the day and overnight and I’m still getting rewards, but the block plotting speed has gone from estimating a few minutes per block to fractions of blocks per hour (see screenshot). Just now I checked the resource monitor in taskman and my memory was maxed out, so I shut down space acres and over the course of a minute or so memory usage dropped from 31.9/32GB to 7/3 2GB. Any ideas what might be happening? Here’s the latest (and 2nd latest) log.

space-acres.log (6.5 MB)

space-acres.log.1.gz (1.5 MB)

When I originally posted this on the farmer-chat slack, here was the state of space acres:

Now, it’s been running for another ~19 hours and is now here:

Faster networking is enabled, reduce plotting CPU load is disabled, each of the plot’s drives both have >300GB free.

When I’d done my original plotting, I’d swapped out my daily GPU (an intel ARC A770 16GB) for an old GTX 1660 I had kicking around, but it’s a bit of a PITA to swap that in and out whenever I need replotting.

Thanks for this report! I have also noticed slightly slower re-plotting on Space Acres over the last few months on my Mac.

After skimming your logs, I found:

  • occasional timestamp validation failures, this means your computer clock is more than 30 minutes behind the rest of the network

  • a few network connection failures/resets, which might slow down plotting slightly

  • decent numbers of DSN peers, and no other DSN or segment failures, which means your network connection is working reasonably well

The high memory usage is concerning, but I couldn’t find a clear cause for it. Some increased memory usage would make sense if plotting is slow, and more segments are being held in memory.

We released a farmer update yesterday that makes some farmers serve pieces faster. So as other farmers upgrade over the next week or two, you might see a plotting speed increase. (Space Acres doesn’t need any upgrades, because it doesn’t have this bug.)

Some things to check:

  • try disabling faster networking, the extra connections can overwhelm your network connection and actually slow down piece downloads and plotting.
  • make sure your computer is automatically updating its time from a network time server, and the time zone is set correctly.
  • exclude your farm from any antivirus, backup, or other scanning software. That could explain the slower plotting and extra memory usage.

I’ll try disabling faster networking, thanks! re: computer clock being out of sync, that doesn’t feel quite right as I’m running space acres on my main pc. I confirmed that it’s updating time automagically, too. I do have NordVPN installed, although in the period covered by logs I don’t think I’ve connected to it. Also confirmed that Space Acres has the permissions it needs to get through the firewall and it’s not getting flagged by antivirus.

the game is afoot!

Update, it’s been a couple of days and the plotting backlog has mostly cleared out, so that ain’t nothing!
