The March to Mainnet in Overview

Milestones to Mainnet Launch

As we recently announced, the Subspace Foundation is planning to launch the Autonomys Network mainnet in Q3 2024. The milestones that Autonomys Labs needs to hit on the way to this momentous occasion are gathered together in the below diagram. Please note that this is for indicative purposes only and there are a few caveats to apply:

  • For indication of milestones only
  • Not to scale
  • Order of tasks may be amended
  • Some tasks will overlap
  • This diagram ignores concurrency (and is pretty loose with dependency too)

With these points in mind, here it is:

Let’s take a look running roughly left-to-right and top-to-bottom.

Stake Wars 2

As you can see, we are already underway with work on the Astral staking interface in full-swing and the network runtime upgrades already running on Gemini 3h. Next up we will deploy our second domain based on the Auto ID runtime which will join Nova our EVM runtime domain and form the foundation on which Stake Wars 2 will run. Stay tuned for our confirmation of the date we will launch this incentivized initiative.

Protocol Roadmap

One of the core goals of the Subspace Protocol and therefore the Autonomys Network has always been massive scalability. Notice that we have already defined our scalability roadmap internally (spoiler alert - sharding) and plan to publish details on how it will work in the near future. We also have an ongoing protocol security audit with SR Labs who we have been engaged with for well over a year now.

As mentioned earlier, we will also be aligning testnet emissions around the start of Stake Wars 2.

Hacker Month 2

The fun does not stop with our staking contest of course and once the Stake Wars are running, Engineering will be delivering our Auto SDK v1 which is a toolkit enabling developers to interact with the Auto ID domain effortlessly. The SDK will take all the low-level calls required to work with Autonomys Identity and provide high-level work flows that allow builders to focus on developing their ideas rather than boilerplate code to interact with the identity primitive.

This unlocks Hacker Month 2 which will have prizes for EVM developers and those trailblazers eager to get started on Auto ID. We are truly excited to see what our community is able to build on Nova and Auto ID!! We will launch with suitable fanfare and expect there will be a number of exciting calls, workshops and other initiatives designed to engage and activate developers.

Not least of which will be a partner we will announce shortly who will be deploying some critical infrastructure projects onto Nova in both testnet and mainnet. So there will be established dApps for our community to play with.

Subspace Foundation

As mentioned previously, the Subspace Foundation is a Swiss entity setup back in the middle of last year. It is the foundation that will be responsible for launching mainnet and a number of activities related to TGE. This is a paperwork-heavy process but soon you will see a presence built out with a website setup, a voice setup on socials and a number of tasks only the foundation can deliver being worked on.

Ambassador agreements for example must be issued from the foundation and, drumroll please, tokenomics! We know this is a regular ask from the community but we have to make sure we know exactly how long the testnet will run for before we can produce final figures for our pie charts. As you can see, we expect to release tokenomics shortly after ending the incentivized testnet for that very reason.

Speaking of testnet rewards, you will notice that Astral, our block explorer will also be updated to provide a rewards checker so that our testnet farmers will be able to check how they did on previous networks and how that translates into mainnet tokens which will be minted in the genesis block. Time to dust off those old Gemini 1 and Gemini 2 wallets!

Jumping ahead a little, we can see that the foundation will also be launching our AIP process. This is similar to the Ethereum EIP process and is our first step on the road to the progressive decentralization of the project which will ultimately put control in the hands of the community. This gradual transition is a core responsibility of the foundation that you can expect we will be talking on in greater detail closer the time.

Autonomys Whitepaper

Team researchers are currently working on an Autonomys whitepaper. We have the Subspace Protocol whitepaper which describes in detail everything about our blockchain but we want to lay out the technical targets in our sights for the Autonomys Network. We expect there will be an opportunity to talk about some aspects of the paper while it is being worked on but we will be very excited when the completed artifact is ready to be published.

LAUNCH!

There are plans to run a community initiative to gather our community’s most important data and include it in the network’s seed data. This will immortalize those who are selected and, of course, the pictures of their cats. This will run around the end of Stake Wars 2 and lead us into a brief pause on proceedings. More details to come on this.

We have reserved 2-4 weeks for critical preparations with the Subspace Foundation for the mainnet launch. There are a number of smaller tasks that are required but top of mind for us is preparing the genesis block to ensure testnet rewards are represented accurately and a final security audit from SR labs. Once we are ready it will be time for the main event…

The launch itself will be coordinated by the foundation and will kick off the real Space Race (remember our excellent dress-rehearsal Mini Space Race back in February?) to activate mainnet rewards. You can expect plenty of hoopla from those of us in the Ecosystem team and we have plans for plenty of ways for our community to be involved and engage with us.

Our community means everything to us. Join us on this last leg of our journey - exciting times lay ahead.

Hi Jim. I don’t see any milestone for the GUI application (named Space Acres now). I’d like to know if we have plan to improve/upgrade the app before mainnet?

There’ll be a big wave of new users when mainnet launch. And people will tentatively compare what we have with Chia and Spacemesh. Both these projects had spent lots of effort to build a GUI app for farmers to run node/farmer/wallet on it.

Thanks.

Hey @dragonP, work is afoot to give the UI a makeover and MacOS packaging but what specific milestone would you like to see for Space Acres? It’s a production application that is being updated in step with the Advanced CLI.

Genuinely interested to hear what improvements and upgrades you’d like to see (cc @Diana_Subspace who is leading the UI updates) here. And please also note that there is a “Share Feedback” feature right in Space Acres in the hamburger menu.

Hi Jim, I’d very keen to see the following developments to the Space Acres GUI.

  1. Less bug. It still has bug more often than the CLI.
  2. Wallet integrated. This is very critical since it will help us to move away from third party wallet. Tbh, I’m not 100% trusting any 3rd party wallet but I have to use Sub wallet now.

The GUI, if wallet is integrated, can also help to bring more nodes in network. It attract normal farmers. And even advanced farmers will likely use it for wallet purpose.

The GUI initially was built as Nazar’s personal product, but I think it should be a strategical product for Autonomys. More effort should be spent for it.

I don’t remember when was the last time there was a bug specific to Space Acres that affected farming, but didn’t affect CLI
Anything in particular?

While there is no doubt that the delay introduced with Stake Wars 2 has had an impact on our ideal timeline we will not be confirming a delay to our targeted Q3 mainnet launch in this post. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at what has been achieved since we last looked at the roadmap.

Ecosystem

Running from left to right and top to bottom as before, we start with our problem child - Stake Wars 2. Please do remember that finding problems like the ones we have with the original launch is exactly what testnets are for and, despite the issues we’ve experienced, the net result is a stronger protocol and a slew of UX improvements that were further out in the roadmap previously. We can see that there is a new item added to the map denoted by the dotted border. Watch our announcements channels for when the new Restart Stake Wars 2 activity will be taking place. The only other completed task in the Ecosystem track is the testnet emissions alignment which took place on the 10th of July and means the current testnet reward pool is growing at 0.05% of total token supply per week.

Hacker Month 2 remains waiting in the wings for a stable Stake Wars to be underway as it has a dependency on the Nova and Auto ID domains being in a state we can launch this exciting initiative designed to attract and engage builders to our ecosystem.

We do have some news on Nova infrastructure projects which we will be sharing with you soon so keep an eye out for that!

Foundation

We continue to work in the background on bootstrapping the foundation. A number of infrastructure tasks have been completed with the foundation gaining the tooling software it needs to function without friction. Team have also been getting familiar with and testing the Substrate governance pallet which will be integrated into the protocol to facilitate the same on-chain governance that powers Polkadot among others. The foundation has inherited the old Subspace GitHub organization after the core protocol code was migrated to the new Autonomys one. Website copy has been drafted and we will work with our design partners on setting its online presence up.

Draft ambassador agreements have also seen progress with them being refreshed from Subspace to Autonomys branding and incorporation of the Ambassador Bylaws. There are some technical questions that need to be answered around vesting contracts and exactly how they will be deployed which, again, we are working with our launch partners on.

Tokenomics will not be shared before we announce the incentivized testnet end date and confirm the allocation that our farmer community has earned.

Product

As we can see, the Astral staking interface did get updated but promptly had many issues which we have covered in the Stake Wars 2 update. These issues have spawned an additional task which is to deploy fixes and enhancements to the software. This is expected to be deployed very shortly (within the next week). We will be appealing to the community for help with initial testing of operator and nominator functions while we monitor closely.

The Auto ID domain was deployed without any major issue which is a win and we have the first version of the Auto SDK designed to ease development with our Auto suite of products. You can expect to see documentation on this coming soon and we will be testing internally in preparation for its use in the upcoming Hacker Month 2.

Protocol

Steady progress has been made on the protocol engineering roadmap. All the Stake Wars 2 upgrades were deployed without major incident (apart from the receipt gap issue that was introduced) and the scalability roadmap documentation is materially complete with just some final reviews required.

The Autonomys whitepaper could potentially be moved up the next time we see the roadmap as drafts have been shared internally and the effort just requires some diagrams and polishing. We’re very excited to share this with you all as it succinctly encapsulates the Autonomys mission and how we plan to achieve our goals.

Summing Up

We are acutely aware of the ramifications of not hitting the dates we share with our community but it’s important to stress that they are target dates that we set based on the best information we have at the time. Our mission is to release mainnet beta when the protocol is ready for that milestone and the delay with Stake Wars 2 has a reasonable probability to affect the launch date. We will not be announcing how we believe that effect will manifest itself before we are able to restart Stake Wars 2 and confirm stability. This is possibly the first big issue that we’ve found on the incentivized testnet and is exactly what the initiative is designed for. The smooth sailing so far is testament to our wonderful engineering team and running multiple domains with staking v2 has introduced a large amount of change and complexity.

We are committed to transparency and will continue to disseminate updates on the target launch date as soon as they are available. We thank you all for your patience as we work through these issues and get things back on track.

Note that this roadmap has been superseded by the Phased Launch Roadmap.

Will Autonomys Mainnet launch in Sept? We are looking forward to it.

Glad you are excited - we are too! We have adopted a phased mainnet launch approach with Phase 1 aiming to be delivered in October. Stake Wars 2 proved we still have some work to do on domains but consensus is ready. More details in the post linked above.
